Best Shampoo For Dry Scalp

Linda White

Does your scalp itch? While some people scratch their heads while thinking, others scratch their head because there is a nagging, persistent itch on their scalp. This is called itchy scalp. Many people assume an itchy scalp must be because of dandruff, but there are numerous conditions that can contribute to a dry, itchy scalp.

The most common reasons are: wrong hair products, bad hair routine, dehydration, various lifestile choices, anxiety, various medical skin conditions (eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, tinea capitis and other fungal infections, psoriasis, cradle cap, ring work, dermatomyositis, etc.)

For long-term relief, it’s important to first find out what’s causing your itchy scalp.

Here is a short video on what dry scalp is and where it comes from:

Choosing a Good Shampoo

When choosing a shampoo, it’s important to determine the cause of the condition you’re struggling with. Different conditions may call for different treatments. That includes different shampoos.

For example, a dry scalp could be caused by:

Any of these conditions can cause your scalp to become tender and even feel sore and irritated. A shampoo that’s designed specifically to deal with almost any of these conditions will undoubtedly offer some relief. If you find that you do have a specific skin condition, contact your dermatologist.

Stick to shampoos that are free of chemicals, fragrances, and sulfates and parabens. The more natural a shampoo is, the better it will be for your scalp and hair.

In addition, the closer a shampoo can get to replicating or encouraging the natural oil production of your scalp, the better. Safe healing with natural products is the best way to relieve the scalp.

There are many good shampoo options available, but the right choice for you will be different than one for somebody else. We will also talk about the reasons for the dryness and find products that work.

Here are some factors you want to consider when choosing a good scalp shampoo:

  • It’s essential that you find out why the scalp is so itchy and irritated. Is it a medical condition, weather changes, styling products, etc.?
  • If you have color-treated hair, some ingredients may strip the color from your hair while healing your scalp. Some shampoos are specifically designed for colored hair that put moisture back into your scalp and removes the itchiness.
  • When you have thick or dark-colored hair (in particular), you need to avoid a shampoo that makes your hair look overly greasy.
  • If you have sensitive skin, some ingredients may be too harsh and cause further irritation. This can even apply to natural ingredients.
  • Perhaps you are allergic to certain substances. Check the list of ingredients and be sure to avoid that product. There are plenty of alternatives.
  • How long does it take to apply? If you lead a busy lifestyle, you may not have time to go through multiple stages of treatment.
  • You also need to consider how much you can afford to spend. If you need to use a specialist shampoo regularly, it’s a repeated expense. Just because the problem has gone away doesn’t necessarily mean that you can revert to your previous habits. If you do have a medical problem, you may need to continue treating your scalp for life.

Best Shampoo For Dry Scalp

Some shampoos are marketed as a ‘cure for dry scalp.’ While many do provide welcome relief, only a handful will get rid of dry scalp. Using an organic shampoo for dry scalp is a good choice. You won’t have to worry about allergies and unwanted side effects.

Some companies are sneaky and make consumers believe that their shampoo is organic, but there may be ingredients that are not what they seem. These could be to make the product smell better or to increase the shelf life of the product. That isn’t going to help you.

This is why it is so important to check the ingredients, especially the ones that are less prominently displayed. This is where you will find the least-used ingredients. There aren’t many shampoos that are labeled as organic and aren’t, but it pays to perform your own due diligence.

Our top two choices or organic shampoos for dry scalp:

1. Christina Moss Naturals Organic Shampoo

This is one of the best shampoos for dry scalp. The Christina Moss Naturals Organic Shampoo can be used safely for all hair and skin types. It contains no chemicals whatsoever, and it works effectively to heal your damaged scalp.

The essential oils combine, sinking into the scalp. This will remove the debris that is blocking the sebum from surfacing.  So that you know, Sebum is the oil that protects and moisturizes your skin. When your pores are clogged, it can’t do its job properly.

The natural oils won’t leave your hair/scalp feeling greasy or oily. They are loaded with vitamins and minerals that your skin desperately needs to stay healthy. When used a few times a week, this restorative shampoo will heal the scalp and leave you feeling a lot better.

2. Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Hair and Scalp Treatment

Although it says ‘treatment,’ the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Treatment is a 100% natural healing shampoo. Even if you have dandruff, the mixture of ingredients will be able to heal it.

If you are worried about it fading color-treated hair, don’t be. This shampoo won’t fade color, nor will it affect permed hair. Often, getting the hair permed damages the scalp. It will, however, cleanse your scalp and get rid of any white flakes.

It has soothing ingredients, such as Australian tea tree oil, that will stop the itchiness fast. This is not a shampoo that needs to be used daily. You only have to use it a couple of times a week to get great results.

Tea tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a known remedy for various ailments, including scalp conditions, such as an itchy scalp, dandruff and hair loss. The harsh chemicals found in most hair products can strip your hair follicles of vital nutrients required for their optimal health. Using too many products too frequently can put your scalp and hair at risk of drying out and being damaged. A small amount of diluted tea tree oil can help reduce the buildup of dead skin and chemicals in the scalp and shaft.

According to a 2012 study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, a 5% tea tree oil helped reduced scalp scaling among participants, without any side effects. Using a tea tree oil shampoo for an itchy, dry scalp, help cleanse your hair and help it grow at its normal rate. Note that some people can be allergic to tea tree oil, so be sure to test any product on the back of your elbow and stop using it if you have any redness or swelling.

Why is Tea Tree Oil Good for the Hair and Scalp?

Today, scientists have found that tea tree oil contains 98 different compounds that can lead to improved skin and hair health. One of the most noteworthy compounds found in tea tree oil is terpinen-4-ol, which is what gives tea tree oil its astringent properties.

Tea tree oil is a common ingredient in many soaps and shampoos. The proven antimicrobial properties of tea tree oil make it an excellent ingredient for cleansing the hair, without any side effects.  According to a review published in Clinical Microbiology Reviews, tea tree oil is a potent agent in fighting several types of bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

If you have dry, itchy scalp or any of the scalp conditions, you may benefit greatly from choosing products, especially shampoos and conditioners containing tea tree oil. Some of our top choices include the following.

African American Hair

Dry scalp is common in the African American community. This occurs because the skin genetically lacks sebum. This is the natural oil in the skin that keeps the scalp moisturized. Other things also lead to the lack of sebum include:

  • Fluctuating hormones
  • Vitamin and mineral deficiencies
  • Stress
  • Some prescription medications

Many of the chemicals that are used in styling products, straighteners, and products. These are meant to keep your hair healthy, but can actually do damage to your scalp.

The natural kinks along the hair shafts also prevent moisture from getting into the hair, causing it to dry out as well.

How to Treat Dry Scalp for Black Hair

To begin to make your scalp and hair healthy again, you should start and maintain a good hair care routine. For African American hair, this does not mean that you need to wash your hair every day. Doing so can quickly remove the moisture.

A good routine for dry scalp differs from person to person. You first need to experiment for a perfect oil balance for your scalp, which will inevitably involve some trial and error.

  • You should use hot oil treatments to soothe your sore scalp.
  • For black hair, we recommend using honey and olive oil before shampooing. You’ll find that jojoba oil and coconut oil also work well. Hairdressers and dermatologists recommend these for treating dry scalp in African Americans.
  • You should never put the oil straight onto your scalp. Instead, put some on the back of one hand and use the other hand to apply it to your scalp. It’s easier to do this if you part your hair first.

Products that contain natural ingredients are your scalp’s best friend. Stay away from anything that contains Sodium Laurel Sulfate. This ingredient will dry out your scalp fast.

You should also stay away from heavy oils and greases, as they mix with the natural sebum in your skin and can harden it. This leaves a wax-like film on your scalp that’ll stop your scalp from being able to breathe. It will become inflamed, itchy, and will also wreak havoc on your hair.

Sulfate does clean very well, but a little too well. It not only cleans the built-up debris from your scalp but it also cleans away the oils and moisture that your scalp and hair shafts need. You should use a deep-cleaning shampoo, such as Christina Moss Naturals Organic Shampoo, because it doesn’t contain sulfate.

1. Ooh Treatment Oil

Our number one suggestion for African American hair is Ooh Treatment Oil. It contains all of the natural ingredients that will start to heal your scalp from the time you apply it. This not only cleans the surface of your scalp, but it penetrates deeply, getting to the roots of your hair.  It rids your scalp of the dead skin cells and other things that are blocking the sebum from coming through. It will not make your hair greasy.

African American skin does tend to dry out faster than other types of skin. By using natural ingredients that can effectively treat your scalp, as well as your hair, you will not have to worry about itchiness or frizzy hair anymore. Here are some tips on how to comb natural hair correctly.

For Men

Men’s skin is somewhat tougher than women’s skin (in most cases), so you will likely need a stronger shampoo. One that can remove the dead flakes and take away the itchiness, providing you with a source of quick relief from the discomfort that you’re experiencing.

1. K + S Salon Quality Men’s Shampoo.

There’s a specialist shampoo for men that works called K + S Salon Quality Men’s Shampoo. It contains tea tree oil, along with other ingredients that have healing properties, that is very nourishing for your scalp. Whether you have short, long, thin or thick hair, you will notice a difference to your scalp within a few hours of treatment.

This shampoo has no chemical additives, it is designed for everyday use, it contains natural healing ingredients like tea tree oil, and it is designed specifically for the modern man.

Natural Hair

If your scalp is dry, flaky, and itchy, you want to stay away from chemicals as much as possible. That means taking a closer look at shampoo ingredients.

If you have natural hair, you’re one step ahead already. Colored hair is often harder to treat. If your hair is completely natural, you may be able to find the relief you’re looking for just by switching products.

So, what are some of the best products? Most importantly it’s the use of natural, organic ingredients. If you suffer from a dry scalp, don’t let a build-up of chemicals be the cause. Natural ingredients like tea tree oil can help soothe inflammation and help with dryness and itching.

Again, ingredients are important. But, you should also take a look at what the product advertises it can do. Some are specifically designed for a dry scalp. Others focus on itch relief, inflammation, or dandruff. Choose a shampoo that deals directly with your symptoms.

You want to use something natural, with tea tree oil, so our top suggestions for natural hair are the same as top picks for “organic” and “tea tree” shampoos:

  1. Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo
  2. Maple Holistics Degrease
  3. Neutrogena T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo

Color-Treated Hair

When you add chemicals to your scalp, such as getting a perm or your hair colored, it can dry out the scalp and cause irritation. Many times, the salon sells shampoos and conditioners, but most are only designed to keep the curls or color in place.

1. Tru Moroccan Repair Shampoo

If your scalp has become itchy after having a hair treatment, one of the best shampoos that you can use is Tru Moroccan Repair Shampoo. It will not only heal dry scalp but also keep the coloring or curls in your hair for longer.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, about 7.5 million people in the United States have psoriasis. It is also estimated that about half of all known sufferers psoriasis on the scalp.
It is one of the most common types of dry scalp, and unfortunately, there is no way to cure it. However, with management and treatment, most people can live with the condition relatively comfortably.

What are good shampoos for scalp psoriasis?

The difference between psoriasis shampoo and regular shampoo has a lot to do with the ingredients. Shampoo specifically designed for this skin condition contains ingredients that will help to soften the scaly patches and loosen them enough so they can be washed off.

There are different brands and formulas for psoriasis shampoos, but there are two main types to consider are as follows:

  • Medicated shampoo: Medicated shampoos for psoriasis typically contain a topical steroid, ketoconazole, salicylic acid, and zinc pyrithione.
  • Coal tar shampoo: Coal tar scalp psoriasis shampoo is made up mostly of coal tar itself, but other ingredients often include coconut oil or salicylic acid. Coal tar shampoo is usually thick and dark, with a potent odor.

The strength and formula needed are dependent on your case. If you’re not sure where to get started, talk to your doctor. They’ll be able to let you know the strength of the shampoo needed to fight back against your skin condition.

Below, you’ll find some of the best shampoos for dry scalp that is caused by scalp psoriasis, based on their effectiveness and ingredients.

Maximize the Effectiveness of a Scalp Shampoo

These shampoos work well to heal the scalp. There are things that you can do to help them to get to work even faster.

  • Massage the shampoo into your scalp.  This helps in several ways. By applying some pressure, and using your fingertips to massage the product into your scalp, you will be able to lift the dead skin cells off of your skin more easily. It’ll also help to improve circulation.
  • Use warm water when shampooing your hair. The hotter the water, the more moisture your skin will lose. You are advised to use cool to warm water on your skin and scalp, to help keep the skin moisturized.
  • When you style your hair, use the hair dryer on low heat. Don’t do anything that will further dry out the scalp.
  • For better results, you may want to leave the shampoo on for 5-10 minutes (unless the bottle specifically says otherwise) before rinsing. If you have severe scaling, it may take a bit of extra time for the shampoo to fully penetrate the skin.
  • If the scaly patches on your scalp have become extremely thick and have spread, you may need to treat them more often. The shampoos listed here, and some others, often claim to work with one use. While using them once should provide relief, it likely won’t make the patching disappear right away. In many cases, you may need to use the product daily for several weeks. However, keep an eye on the overall health of your scalp as you do this. Shampooing every day can dry out the scalp, and cause more problems. If you notice more dryness and itching, cut back to using the product two or three times a week.
  • Psoriasis shampoo is designed for your scalp, not your hair. We usually aren’t used to thinking that way about hair care products. If you want to follow up your use of a psoriasis shampoo with a cosmetic conditioner, feel free. Just make sure the hair care products you regularly use don’t contribute to any skin irritation.

Dry Scalp Recovery Tips

Whether you’re suffering from an itchy, dry scalp or have brittle, damage-prone hair, it is important to understand that improving hair health should be a lifestyle choice and not a short-term fix. While shampoos and conditioners can help improve your condition immensely, to achieve optimum results, you have to incorporate additional care steps to your routine.

1) Avoid Using Too Many Harsh Chemicals

Chemicals can be found in most products that we purchase. These chemicals, especially the ones used in dyes and bleaches, are often direct contributors to an itchy, dry scalp. This is mainly because they zap the moisture from your scalp and hair, leaving them parched and susceptible to flaking.

Luckily, there’s an easy fix to this.  By reducing your exposure to chemicals and using natural, moisturizing home remedies, you can dodge these negative effects and improve the health of your hair and scalp. If you color or heat style your hair often, be sure to condition it thoroughly every time you shower and use a deep conditioner at least once a week to lock in moisture.

You can also make your own deep conditioner, using a combination of oils and high-fat ingredients, such as avocado and coconut oil (more on this later).

2) Rinse Your Hair with Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is an incredible home remedy for dry, flaky scalp because it contains anti-inflammatory properties and probiotics to kill yeast and bacteria and tame scalp itchiness. Furthermore, its anti-inflammatory properties help soothe the scalp and prevent the onset of dandruff. Its high acidity helps maintain healthy pH levels in the hair, which are otherwise disturbed by highly alkaline shampoos and other care products.

Apart from being an excellent antimicrobial ingredient to add to your hair care crew, apple cider vinegar also acts as a mild conditioner, adding more bounce and shine to the hair.

To prepare an apple cider vinegar rinse, mix ½ cup of apple cider vinegar with ½ cup water. Take the rinse with you to the shower and pour it all over your scalp and hair after showering. Massage it well into your scalp and leave it for 10 minutes. Rinse with cold water and repeat every few days.

Apple cider vinegar may leave your hair smelling pungent, but its strong scent usually fades as your hair dries – usually within 30 minutes.

3) Make Your Own Hair and Scalp Mask

Have you ever tried making your own hair mask, using nourishing ingredients such as honey, avocado, and banana? While this may sound good enough to eat, each of these ingredients can have a massive impact on your hair and scalp. For example, honey is has a long history of being a natural antiseptic and has been used for wound healing for centuries. A research published in the journal, African Health Sciences suggests that the microorganisms found in honey may have antibacterial and antifungal effects, making honey an excellent ingredient for improving itchy scalp.

To build a perfect hair mask, it’s important that you add moisturizing ingredients, along with ingredients with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. One of our favorite DIY hair masks is literally a smoothie for your scalp. It includes bananas, honey, and avocados to help fight dryness, add moisture and nourishment and prevent dandruff. Using this mask on the regular can help reduce inflammation, flakes, and dryness of the scalp.

Avocados are packed with antioxidants and healthy fats, which keep the scalp and hair well-moisturized and nourished. It acts as a natural deep conditioner, which also helps to add shine and volume to your hair. To create a banana and avocado hair mask, combine 2 ripe bananas with one avocado (overripe avocados work fabulously) and 2 tablespoons of honey. You can also replace the honey with a few drops of tea tree oil if you’re looking for a vegan-friendly recipe.

This recipe is totally adjustable, and you can add high protein sources such as yogurt, eggs or tofu to it as well. For an added deep conditioning effect, add a couple of tablespoons of olive oil or coconut oil. Blend all the ingredients together and apply all over your hair and scalp. Leave the mask on for 30-60 minutes, shampoo and condition as usual and finish with an apple cider vinegar rinse.

4) Coconut Oil Moisturizing Treatment

Naturally extracted from mature coconuts, organic coconut oil makes an excellent moisturizing treatment that can be used regularly, without harming your scalp. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid – a saturated fat with potent antimicrobial properties. The lauric acid in coconut oil also makes it highly absorbent and therefore, effective in moisturizing your dry scalp and hair.

Coconut oil also helps soothe an itchy scalp, keeping you from scratching your hair. It may also be beneficial for individuals with itchy scalps resulting from eczema.

does tea tree oil shampoo dry out your hair?

According to a 2010 study published in the European Journal of Pediatrics, a combination of coconut oil and anise was more effective in reducing scalp itchy than permethrin – a medication used in head lice treatments.

5) Wash Your Hair Less Often

The last thing you want to do with a dry, itchy, flaky scalp is not to wash it. But hear us out. Your itchy, dry scalp may actually be a result of washing your hair too much and over-stripping your scalp’s natural oils. This makes sense, because the more you strip your hair of its natural moisture, the more it triggers your sebaceous glands to produce excess oil, making your hair greasier between showers.

Regular showers, especially hot showers, also tend to open the pores in your scalp, and the cuticles on your hair shaft, making the two more vulnerable to moisture loss. Over time, washing your hair too much may dry your hair and scalp, resulting in dry, brittle hair and itchy scalp.

If you shampoo every day, consider doing it every other day. Note that when you do reduce your showering days, it will take some time for your scalp to adjust to your new routine. So be patient! On in-between days, try using a dry shampoo spray to freshen your hair. It’s a simple solution that can save you a lot of money on treatments in the long-term.

6) Avoid Inflammatory Foods

Just like candida, certain foods can cause flare-ups and inflammation on your scalp. Therefore, it is important that you keep away from inflammatory foods as much as possible. This includes anything processed, such as chips or candy, as well as foods containing, sugar, dairy, and alcohol.

Your best bet would be to include more antifungal, anti-inflammatory foods in your diet.

Some excellent examples include:

  • Garlic: The best way to consume raw garlic is to chop it into pill-sized pieces and swallow it with a glass of water. Try having 1-3 cloves of garlic per day, depending on how much your stomach can handle.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Mix 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to one cup of water and have this drink once a day.
  • Banana. Can be added to your smoothies and protein shakes.
  • Avocado toast.
  • Flaxseed. Add a tablespoon of flaxseeds to your cereals or smoothies.
  • Ginger. Can be brewed with hot water and honey to make a delicious tea.
  • Coconut oil. Use it sparingly for cooking, instead of vegetable oil.
  • Turmeric. Add it to your smoothies, curries or make a golden latte with one teaspoon of turmeric, one cup of almond milk and a cinnamon stick.

7) Workouts (Yoga and Tai Chi)

Exercise can help reduce any type of inflammation, including inflammation associated with dry, itchy scalp. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, people with psoriasis reported positive outcomes after performing yoga, tai chi, qigong and other workouts.

Workouts stretch your body and strengthen it. This increases blood flow to all organs and tissue, including your scalp. Furthermore, when coupled with meditation, exercising can also help relieve stress, thereby reducing scalp flare-ups and itchiness.

What’s the right scalp treatment for you?

As you can see, there are plenty of different shampoos. Each of the options listed above offers the same result: A healthy, itch-free scalp. However, each of them works differently to get you there. So, it’s important to know why your scalp is itching in the first place. Is it too dry? Is it too oily? Or, is there a more serious skin condition to consider?

It’s also always a good idea to consider what others are saying. By checking out product reviews, you’re bound to find someone who is experiencing similar symptoms to your own. See what they have to say about what a particular shampoo did for them. The closer you can get to your own symptoms, the better.

Once you know the specific symptoms associated with your discomfort, you can find the perfect product. The best itchy scalp shampoo for natural hair is completely dependent on your own needs. So, look for symptoms, and choose your shampoo accordingly. You’ll protect your natural hair, and restore your healthy hair and scalp in the process.

No more embarrassing dandruff, no more flaking skin, and no more itching. You don’t need harsh chemicals or expensive treatments to find relief. You can find that soothing sensation at home, with any of these products.
